Is this training for you?
Disordered eating can take many forms--yoyo dieting, strict food rules, eliminating food groups, feeling out of control with food, skipping meals, numbing through binge eating, purging, excessive exercise, and countless other ways. At the core of disordered eating behaviors is often a deep-seeded belief of "I'm not okay as I am" and shrouded in intense shame. Many clients find their ways to these styles of coping as a response to trauma and attachment wounds, presenting a complicated treatment landscape for therapists who feel stuck with the question: "Where do I begin?"
Using EMDR Therapy with disordered eating can be a powerful healing tool but requires specialized case conceptualization and treatment planning skills to have it be most effective. This advanced training will give you the tools you need to begin working with this population with confidence and competence.
We will review the impact that diet culture and fatphobia has upon clients and therapists alike, critically examining what adaptive memory networks are likely needed to be built and enhanced throughout Phases 1-8. We will briefly review neurobiology of disordered eating through the lens of polyvagal theory and how this informs our AIP case conceptualization, treatment goals, and skillful interventions. We will also review assessment of the severity of disordered eating behaviors and defenses to navigate choosing the right level of care. Clinicians will learn several preparation techniques tailored to those with disordered eating, including resourcing scripts, enhancing emotional and somatic awareness, and parts work. We'll also learn how to target disordered eating behaviors through symptom-focused protocols such as DeTUR and Feeling State. We'll also review how to develop a comprehensive treatment plan to address the trauma and attachment injuries underlying these behaviors using the standard protocol, identifying several target clusters. Because there are often many defenses, blocking beliefs, and ambivalence with this population, we'll review how to get unstuck with helpful interweaves.
Several demonstration videos will be included, however no group work is incorporated into this course.
COURSE OVERVIEW
Disordered eating often develops as a coping response to trauma and attachment wounds, leaving therapists unsure where to begin. This advanced EMDR training equips clinicians with specialized tools for case conceptualization and treatment planning to work with this population effectively. Topics include the impact of diet culture and fatphobia, neurobiology of disordered eating through polyvagal theory, and assessment of severity to guide level of care. Participants will learn tailored preparation techniques, symptom-focused protocols such as DeTUR and Feeling State, and how to develop comprehensive treatment plans addressing trauma and attachment injuries. Demonstration videos highlight practical application, helping clinicians build confidence, navigate defenses, and move clients toward healing with clarity and competence.
